A Home in Ventimiglia
Where to buy, what homes cost and what is changing in the border town between the Riviera and the Côte d’Azur.
A Border Town on Two Rivieras
Ventimiglia sits about 7 km from the French border, at the mouth of the Roia river, which divides the town in two.
Above the modern town, the medieval old town, Ventimiglia Alta, looks down over the sea. On the plain of Nervia lie the remains of Roman Albintimilium, and towards the border are the Balzi Rossi caves and the Hanbury Botanical Gardens. The town has a station on the Genoa to Ventimiglia line and its own marina, Cala del Forte, run by Monaco Ports.
Buyers come for value close to France and Monaco, for the marina, or for a villa on the hills towards the border. Asking prices are among the lowest on this stretch of coast, and they vary widely from one district to the next.

A Marina and a Waterfront in the Making
Ventimiglia’s marina, Cala del Forte, opened in October 2020 and is run by Monaco Ports under a concession to 2094. It has about 180 berths for boats of 6.5 to 76 metres, and a shuttle boat to Monaco’s Port Hercule takes about 15 minutes.
Above the marina, the Borgo del Forte Waterfront and Campus scheme proposes a high-end hotel, homes, an international school, public parking and lifts to the centre on the former Nervia railway land. It has been reported at around €200 million. In February 2026 Regione Liguria said it would give a favourable environmental opinion, while talks continue on the heritage authority’s comments. Final approval is still needed.
On the seafront, the council has approved a new beach plan, and in September 2026 it announced the start of work on the Via Oberdan promenade, the main way to the sea from the station and the centre.
Timings are the stated aims of councils and developers, and several approvals are still pending.
