A Home in Imperia

Where to buy, what homes cost and what is changing in the provincial capital and its two harbours.

Living in Imperia

Two Towns, One City

Imperia was created in 1923 by joining Porto Maurizio and Oneglia. It is the capital of the province.

Porto Maurizio, to the west, climbs a hill crowned by its cathedral, with the medieval Parasio quarter and the marina below. Oneglia, to the east, is the busier commercial town, with arcaded streets, the old harbour and the olive oil and pasta makers. Imperia is known for its olives and flowers, and the coastal cycle path now continues into the city.

Buyers come for a full-size Italian city with everyday services all year round, for the sea and the marina, and for average asking prices that are the lowest of the main towns on this coast.

Investing in Imperia

The Coast's Largest Marina Project

Imperia plans to complete its marina at Porto Maurizio through one private partner, who would build and run it for 65 years. The council approved the tender guidelines in September 2026, with the tender due to be published by 31 October 2026 and works to be finished within six years of signing.

The latest business plan puts the works at €167 million, from 2027 to 2032, about 38% of it financed by banks. Five international groups expressed interest in late 2025, including Reuben Brothers, the owners of Portosole in Sanremo. Separately, a masterplan for the Porto Maurizio waterfront, with beach nourishment and a temporary mooring, has cleared a first environmental step.

Timings are the stated aims of councils and developers, and several approvals are still pending.
